Sumo

Sumo is a traditional Japanese form of wrestling that involves two wrestlers, or “rikishi,” who face each other in a circular ring, called a “dohyo.” The objective of sumo is to force the opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body, other than the soles of their feet, touch the ground. Sumo is characterized by its rich cultural heritage, rituals, and ceremonies, including the use of salt to purify the ring before matches. Wrestlers compete in a series of tournaments, and their rankings are determined by their performance. Sumo emphasizes strength, technique, and strategy and is recognized as Japan’s national sport.
