Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by throwing a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket, which is elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular court, with a hoop located at each end. Points are scored by making field goals (worth two or three points, depending on the distance from the hoop) or free throws (worth one point).

The objective of basketball is to outscore the opponent by shooting the ball into the basket while defending against the opposing team’s attempts to do the same. Players advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while moving) or passing it to teammates. The game involves a variety of skills including shooting, dribbling, passing, and defending, and it emphasizes teamwork and strategy.

Basketball originated in the late 19th century and has since become one of the most popular and widely played sports in the world, with professional leagues, amateur organizations, and extensive youth participation. The sport is governed by established rules and regulations, including those set by bodies like the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA).
